You can pay your dues without the long hours. Your resume won't look any different if the firm you start with is just as reputable as the other firms who are working their employees to death. My industry has a stratification of companies and the ones everyone wants to work for are the ones who value the work-life balance. Those companies hire without needing to see them come from the other type of company.
