Here is the real reason why BYU was a title contender in 1984: 1979, 1980, 1981,

and 1983.

By 1984, BYU had won 9 straight conference championships. 4 of the previous 5 years, BYU finished ranked in the top 12. In 1983, they finished 11-1 including wins over the PAC 10 Champions, the Big 8 runner ups, and the #13 in the nation.

This is why BYU was taken so seriously.
