Even in 1984 they were voted champions. They won every game but they did not play a top schedule. They earned the championship and I’m not one that says they don’t deserve it but had they gone through a true playoff I don’t think they would have won. We will never know and that doesn’t really matter at this point. What other years were they truly title contenders? They have not played a top schedule. Even going undefeated (which they only did once 40 years ago) against the competition they were playing does not truly warrant a championship in my opinion. I do believe they should make the playoffs. But as we move forward in the new playoff era there will be very few (if any) G5 national champions.

I think fans need to readjust their expectations. Hopefully we can be consistent top 25 teams with the occasional magical season where we make a run. Look how few teams have won a championship or even played for the championship in the last 20 years.
