My honest opinion is that he was so hands off to the extent that the program and
major decisions like recruiting style were made in large part by Ed Lamb, who preferred to recruit raw undeveloped players and then tried to develop them once at BYU. Combine that with being a non P4 independent, and there you have it.

Kalani says he’s very hands off. I believe him. I know everyone will continue to say how Kalani and Tuiaki are the worst coaches under the sun, because they hold the titles of HC and DC. But when two defensive coaches who coached under Whittingham suddenly run a completely different style of defense for 7 years that just so happens to be what people have told me Ed Lamb prefers, I’m going to put 2 and 2 together that Ed Lamb was given a lot of authority in decision making in the program.

Once the defense failed so miserably in 2022, that was certainly Ed Lamb’s cue that it was time to leave. And a lot has changed, hasn’t it?
