I had a similar experience.
I did campus visits while I was applying to schools, and again when I came home from my mission. Both times I visited BYU's campus, I just didn't feel like I belonged. It wasn't that I didn't want to go there, and I love and respect the school, I just didn't feel like it was the right decision for me at the time.
I really didn't have any desire to attend SUU before my mission, mostly because I didn't really want to live with my parents, and I didn't really want to go to college with a bunch of kids from high school. I wanted the chance to branch out and meet new people and have the "college experience." But when I got home from my mission, and as I spent time visiting campus and talking to friends at the school, at the institute, and in my student ward, I really felt like I needed to stay in Cedar City and go to SUU, and it's been a wonderful choice. I've had awesome academic opportunities, I love my program, and I feel very comfortable here.
Every student and every situation is different, and what might be a great decision for one person might not be for someone else.
