If he was no longer associating with these boys, I'd hope the bullying would go away. You can't stop the bullies but you can try and remove yourself from a toxic situation. There is no easy solution and it seems that most on here believe that you should report it and let the chips fall where they may. I know my kids would be absolutely furious if I did that to them and could possibly damage our relationship going forward.
