When he first arrived here with his 3-3-5 defense they struggled. He recognized that our deepest position was LB and not the defensive backfield and realized he needed to get more LBs in the field.
As a result, he reached out to Dom Capers, one of the masterminds of the 3-4 defense, who was the DC for the Houston Texans at the time. Bronco and several assistants traveled to Houston to spend several days learning the 3-4 first hand from Capers. The 3-4 was designed to be confusing to offenses and make it difficult to pick up and block blitzes, because it was hard to tell where the pressure was coming from, partly because there were so many capable athletes (LB) on the field and the flexibility it gave with alignments.
After that, Bronco’s defense became very good. That is when he became the defensive genius. He was humble enough to reach out and learn.
