False. LaVell was very knowledgeable about the West Coast Offense
and football in general. He had been the defensive coordinator before at BYU under Hudspeth. It's been mentioned by many who knew LaVell far better than you & I that LaVell decided to go with the passing attack BECAUSE he was the defensive coordinator & knew it gave BYU the best chance to succeed.

There have also been numerous reports of LaVell having "in-depth" conversations with other head coaches about the West Coast Offense. LaVell knew his X's & O's.

Yes, he allowed Dewey Warren, Doug Scoville, Wally English,, Ted Tolner, Mike Holmgren & Norm Chow/Roger French to call plays but LaVell knew his stuff. He wasn't "out of the loop" on the offense.

The myth that LaVell didn't "know much" should've died long ago.
