You're right, but the last thing I want tied to my performance is my students'
performance. I REGULARLY have 25% of my students missing class. How is that the teacher's fault? I regularly have 2-5 students sleep in class. I am not their father. I'm not going to wake them up. I regularly have 3-10 students stealing looks at their phones (and some outright playing on their phones) in class. I can't be everywhere at all times. I regularly have 3-5 students late to class. Again, how can the teacher control this?

The above situations happen regularly, IN EVERY CLASS. They are not random, out of nowhere occurrences. In the current environment, you'd lose 50% of your teachers overnight if you tied their continued employment and compensation to how their students perform.

Parents who aren't aware of, or don't care, what their kid does or doesn't do at school are part of the problem.
