I am an oldtimer in following recruiting
I have gone from subscription newsletters in the 80's - 90's, to cougarnet when it was just a massive group email, and jumped to the internet with the newspaper comment sections and finally to the byuboards, so yeah, I have many years of following fandom ebbs and flows and recruiting.

Just off the top of my head, I could take the LDS kids from USC & Utah and add them to the BYU roster and I think that pretty easily is a top 20 team, I don't think there is enough LDS talent to be a top 5 team yet, but in another 20 years, there probably will be, as Polynesian genes are way above the curve in producing D-1 talent, 20 years ago there wasn't enough LDS talent to sustain a top 20ish team mainly by itself, based on the last few years, I think there is now enough LDS talent to do that.
This year there is 1 5* and I think 6 4* LDS kids, very similar to last year, and not much different from the prior few years, if BYU had that as half of their recruiting class every year, that would be a top 20 recruiting class every year.... easily.

BYU will never get 100% of them, but this year we will get 2/7 4*+ that is a pretty terrible average given the LDS advantage and very similar to the last few years, there are many issues at play that are the roots of that result, but if BYU wants to be competitive, they need to figure out how to get that recruiting success rate into the 75% range.
