I just interviewed a Mormon kid for an associate job...
Not to be rude, I was kind of put off by him. I post this as I am trying to get perspective of him by CB/Mormon nation to see if I am missing something.

I won't post the interview, but here are a few things that he did/said that really was a turn-off:

First, he walked into the interview with shoes that looked like he had just worn climbing through a jungle to get to. I asked him when the last time he had polished them and he said he never had, then made a snide remark about why waste the money if they are just going to get scuffed up again. This is a big turnoff to me, I believe 100% that you act as you dress, and appearance is always important in the business world.

Secondly, We talked about appearance. I told him how important it was to dress nice and I explained to him why I felt it was important to dress more than just a button down and slacks. Though he doesnt have to wear his suit while sitting at his desk, I require them to wear it every day in the event it is needed (and youd be surprised how often it is). He remarked that he only had one suit and asked if that was enough. Said he didnt like to spend money on suits, and couldnt imagine spending more than a couple hundred on a few. I was shocked at his response. Now I dont expect everyone to go buy them from the same place I get mine, or spend the same money, but a couple hundred dollars is really telling. I told him a $200 suit from JCPennys isnt going to cut it. He was really upset, told me it was absurd to spend more than that because you couldnt tell the difference anyway between $1,000 suit, and a $200 suit.

Thirdly, during the course of the interview he talked about his two year mission a lot in response to many of the questions I asked. He was borderline, in my impression, bragging about it and how it sets him apart from his peers. It felt as if he wasnt going to stop talking about it unless I praised him for his mission. He then told me that is where he learned that having shoes like his shows how hard of a worker he is. Having them polished only hides the hard work. And that he bought a $200 suit for his mission, and only replaced once as he was about to come home. The fact that he wore it every day and it held up showed that his $200 suit was just as good as my $1,000 suit.

I was really turned off by this kid, mostly his attitude. There was a lot more said, stuff about how important his family is to him and that will always be number, same with his religion. Ive interviewed many Mormon kids in my life, and many act this way, and others dont. My family is more important to me than anything, but understanding not to state that in an interview is important. Overall, I really wasnt impressed with this young man. I am interested to know if this is a cultural thing? Or just this kid(s)?

What say you CB?
