What to watch in Week 10

Here's the best games to watch in each time slot for Week 10.  After a rough last week, it'll be exciting to see Retzlaff, but there's games throughout the day worth watching

Pre-Saturday Games

It's a bit late on these - would have recommended TCU @ Texas Tech (5PM Thursday, FS1), but at this point, just wait until Saturday

Saturday Morning (Up until Noon Mountain)

Nothing too amazing here.  Partly because there are fewer future BYU opponents to scout and partly because the games just aren't great.  There's a clear best game...and then a lot of moderatly OK games.  The best choice is #23 Kansas St @ #7 Texas (10AM, FOX).  It's a Big 12 game, the only ranked-on-ranked matchup in this window and Texas' toughest opponent the rest of the season.  Texas is only favored by 3.5 so should be a good game

If you don't want that one...well there's one solid backup and then about 3 that are equally mediocre:

  • #15 Notre Dame @ Clemson (10 AM, ABC) has the big names and the close line (Notre Dame by 3).  There's no particular BYU connection, but it should be a good game and a chance to see if clemson can get their act together

  • Arkansas @ Florida (10 AM, ESPN2) is kind of a vicarious BYU/Utah battle with BYU's SEC win matched up against Utah's SEC win, so that could drive some interest.  It's a stretch... but Florida is only favored by 3.5, which likely makes it more interesting than #1 Ohio St @ Rutgers (10 AM, CBS) which requires that you convince yourself Rutgers is 6-2 and therefore good and will make it a game...even though Ohio St is favored by 18.5.  Or even worse is Arizona St @ Utah (12 AM, PAC12) which shouldn't be close (Utah favored by 10.5) or relevant ... but can at least ague both are future Big 12 teams

Saturday Afternoon (Noon-3 Mountain)

I'm honestly unsure of the premier game in this window for most people, but for fans of BYU an dthe Big 12, it's obvious.  #9 Oklahoma @ #22 Oklahoma St (1:30 PM, ABC) is a fantastic game.  Ranked-on-ranked, two future opponents, the last Bedlam, relatively close game (Oklahoma favored by 6)... it's the easy choice.  Even if it's not the game most of the country will be watching

Other options include

  • #12 Missouri @ #2 Georgia (1:30 PM, CBS) - Probably not a good game, but I expect it to start with the most viewers.  Two SEC teams with only one loss between them (Missouri's loss to LSU) and both in the Top-12?  That'll drive interest.  There's a possibility Georgia runs away with it though (they're favored by 15.5) and then more could switch to Bedlam
  • Viewer's choice for the last recommendation.  Do you want a high-ranked team blowing out an overmatched opponent.  Then you have #4 Florida St @ Pitt (1:30 PM, ESPN) with Florida St favored by 21.5.  Another blowout...but with pageantry?  Army @ Air Force (12:30 PM, CBSSN) with Air Force favored by 18.  Meaningless but close Big 12 matchups?  UCF @ Cincinnati (1:30 PM, FS1) and Houston @ Baylor (1:30 PM, ESPN+) give you multiple options.  Probably my choice is #11 Penn St @ Maryland (1:30 PM, FOX) with Penn St favored by "only" 8.5.

Saturday Prime (3-5:59 Mountain)

Once again, the BYU game is getting stuck going up against the strongest viewing window out there.  That said, the obvious choice here is BYU @ West Virginia (5:00 PM, FOX).  Both teams have surprised a bit, both are 5-3 and BYU is starting a new quarterback, which is always exciting.  The predictions are...not good for BYU - but it'll be interesting to watch no matter what.  Lots to learn (and love).  WVU has a 71.4% chance to win by FPI and Vegas has them favored by 12.  And being on FOX is nice, but I worry about viewership with the other options out there

Competitors include:

  • #21 Kansas @ Iowa St (5:00 PM, ESPN) - Probably not the game that steals the ratings, but a ranked team and a former opponent versus a future opponent makes it interesting for BYU fans to follow.  Iowa State has looked surprisingly good this season and is favored, but only by 3.  Our last chance to see them play before the come to LES next week.
  • #14 LSU @ #8 Alabama (5:45 PM, CBS) - This is the game that is going to dominate the ratings this week.  Neither Alabama nor LSU are what they normally are... but they're still two very good SEC teams with marquee names in a tight game (Alabama favored by 3).  It's hard to see any casual fans going to other games
  • #5 Washington @ #20 USC (5:30 PM, ABC) - Even with the LSU/Alabama game, you'd hope BYU would draw some West Coast fans... but it just so happens the second best game of the day is on at the same time and involves Western US teams.  And it also looks to be a close game, with Washington favored by only 3.  USC has the huge brand and big-name players.  Washington is absolutely in the playoff mix.  If anything beats LSU/Alabama, this will be it.

Oh and in case anyone was hoping we could lose the Southern viewers (LSU/Bama) and the Western viewers (USC/Washington), but at least get some from the Midwest...Purdue @ #3 Michigan (5:30 PM, NBC) also plays in this window.  Luckily Purdue is terrible and Michigan should destroy them to the point of making it a boring game, but BYU/WVU is pretty much only going ot get people who are wanting to seek that specific game out.

Saturday Evening (6-8:30 Mountain)

Only 6 evening games, but a few interesting ones.  Nothing amazing, but some options. My favorite is probably #19 UCLA @ Arizona (8:30 PM, FS1). UCLA is ranked, and Arizona is an interesting story - they were terrible but have been recruiting well and playing well as they prepare to transition to the Big 12.

Worthwhile alternatives are:

  • #16 Oregon State @ Colorado (8:00 PM, ESPN) - Oregon St lost to Arizona but is still a solid team.  Colorado is...probably not very good, but still interesting and capable of exploding
  • Boise St @ Fresno St (8PM, CBSSN) - Fresno St is looking to usurp Boise St as the face of the MWC and is favored to win this one - but it's close with Vegas liking Fresno by 2.5.  Kind of an intereesting changing of the guard battle
