What games to watch when in Week 4 of the College Football Season

After an uninspiring Week 3 (that actually had some good games), we get a treat in Week 4.  Conference play starts and we get lots of ranked on ranked undefeated matchups this week.  Here are my recommendations for best games to watch in each time slot.  This won't necessarily always be the top game since I'm looking at this as a BYU fan, meaning that BYU games, future BYU opponents, and conference play will get a slight bonus.  And in this week, just getting a decent game will be a challenge so we'll see what happens

Pre-Saturday

Always a fairly limited offering and nothing stands out this week.  If you have to have football you could go Air Force @ San Jose St (Friffday 8:30 PM, FS1) as an interesting games.  Air Force is 3-0, San Jose St is 1-3....but FPI likes San Jose St and Vegas has Air Force favored by only 3.5.  If we want BYU in the top 25 we need other undefeated teams to stop being undefeated.  Air Force isn't getting votes yet, but if they keep winning, they will.

Saturday Morning (Pre-Noon Mountain)

There's some amazing games this week.  Most of them aren't in this timeslot though.  #4 Florida St @ Clemson (10 AM, ABC) though is a great game.  Has ACC conference implications, possible CFP implications (for both teams) and is expected to be very close (Florida St favored by 2)... Great game, just has nothing to do with BYU.

Other, more BYU-relevant options include:

  • SMU @ TCU (10:00, FS1) - Less national relevance here...but more relevance to BYU and the Big 12.  SMU has made it quite clear they're aiming to be the top team in Dallas and has taken numerous shots at TCU and the Big 12.  TCU has been unimpressive so far (not that SMU has been better).  So there's some conference drama there and a chance to try and figure out what TCU really is before we play them next month.  TCU is favored by 6.5
  • #16 Oklahoma @ Cincinnati (10 AM, FOX) - So...this almost certainly won't be a good game.  Oklahoma has been a steamroller (against admittedly weak competition) and Cincy just lost to Miami (OH).  FPI gives Oklahoma a 87% chance and Vegas has them favored by over two touchdowns (14.5).  But Cincinnati is our next opponent, Oklahoma is a later-season opponent and there's a chance it turns into a decent game (this is easily the toughest opponent Oklahoma has yet played)

Saturday Afternoon (Noon-3 Mountain)

There's a LOT of great games in this window.  But the one we'll all be watching is BYU @ Kansas (1:30 PM, ESPN).  Both teams are undefeated, both are receiving votes, winner is likely to be ranked next week and it's BYU's first ever Big 12 conference football game.  This is a great matchup.  It's a shame it's against so many other good ones are at the same time, otherwise we'd get a lot more casual viewers

Other games of interest include

  • #19 Colorado @ #10 Oregon (1:30, ABC)  +  #22 UCLA @ # 11 Utah (1:30, FOX) - These are listed together since they're basically the same thing.  Undefeated, ranked, marquee-name PAC (but soon to be B1G) team going against an undefeated, ranked PAC (but soon to be Big 12) team.  Colorado and Deion will probably draw more interest/viewers...but the Utah/UCLA game (Utah favored by 4.5) will probably be the better game than Colorado/Oregon (Oregon favored by 21)
  • Texas Tech vs West Virginia (1:30, ESPN+) - Texas Tech was expected to be a dark horse for the conference title...but is 1-2 with losses to Wyoming and Oregon (and no FBS wins).  West Virginia was expected to be at the bottom of the conference, but is 2-1 with a P5 win over Pitt in the backyard brawl.  Both teams have defied expectations so far this season (good news for WVU, not so much for Tech) and this will be an interesting game between two future BYU opponents.  Despite the rough start, Texas Tech is still favored by 6.
  • Oklahoma St vs Iowa St (2:00, FS1) - watching this game is asking for pain.  Iowa St hasn't beat an FBS team yet and just lost to Ohio.  Oklahoma St just lost to South Alabama and struggled with Central Arkansas.  (Okla St did beat Arizona St, but that says more about ASU than Oklahoma St).  At this point, this might be a competition to see who the worst team in the Big 12 is (though Baylor might have something to say about that), and I'm not sure even the fanbases of the teams playing want to watch.  But it does make sense for us to watch (or at least follow the game) since they're both opponents later in the season.  Iowa St is favored by 3.5.
  • Note also #15 Ole Miss @ #13 Alabama (1:30, CBS) - Alabama looks mortal for the first time in years.  Ole Miss is undefeated and it's a ranked-on-ranked matchup.  Not super relevant to BYU or the Big 12, but it's a big game with some upset potential (Alabama is favored by only a touchdown) - this would be on the list almost every week in every slot, but this timeslot is just so full of great and relevant games.

Saturday Prime (3-5:30 Mountain)

So many of the best games were unfortunately in the last window.  Here there's lots of good teams playing....but generally against overmatched opponents.  Watching #3 Texas annihilate Baylor just doesn't sound enjoyable.  It's not the objectively best game in this slot...but from a BYU perspective, the game to watch is Arkansas @ #12 LSU (5 PM, ESPN).  Beating Arkansas has changed the feel of the season...but it's also up for debate how good Arkansas is.  LSU probably isn't the best test of that (they're favored by 18), but we're absolutely Arkansas fans the rest of the way.

If that one gets ugly (and it might), the other options are:

  • #6 Ohio St @ #9 Notre Dame (5:30, NBC) - this has no relevance to BYU, the Big 12 or even the future Big 12...but it's an absolutely massive game on the national scale and should be a great game with Ohio St favored by only 3.5
  • #14 Oregon St @ #21 Washington St (5:00, FOX) - The de facto PAC2 championship game!  All kidding aside, this should be a great game, matching up two undefeated ranked teams.  Whichever team loses could fall behind the BYU/Kansas winner as well.  Oregon St is favored by 2.5 so it should be close

Saturday Evening (6-8:30 Mountain)

This is generally the weakest time-slot and that holds true here. The best games also come relatively early here.  Probably the best is UCF @ Kansas St (6 PM, FS1) - most analyses right now have these two teams as the strongest competition as the #3 team in the Big 12.  That may or may not be true.... but one of them is taking a loss here. Kansas St is favored by 6.

Other games to note include:

  • #17 North Carolina @ Pitt (6:00, ACCN) - Pitt has been really bad this season; their only victory has been over FCS Wofford and they have losses to Cincinnati and West Virginia (both expected to be lower end Big 12 teams)...so if Pitt can turn their season around it would look good for the Big 12.  North Carolina is favored by only 7.5 so it's unlikely, but not impossible.
  • Cal @ #8 Washington (8:30, ESPN) + #5 USC @ Arizona St (8:30, FOX) - Once again cheating and naming two...because they are once again the same.  An undefeated, top 10 PAC (soon-to-be B1G) team with an explosive offense playing an absolutely terrible conference opponent.  But if you want an 8:30 game...these are the best options.  Washington is favored by 21, USC by 33.5, so these unfortunately the type of games that put you to sleep.
