Assuming this is not a reverse post...
I agree with some of what you said, but not with all of it.

Who cares where he got his clothes? He either looks that part or he doesn't. If he got his suit on sale it really doesn't matter as long as it is up to standards. I would be less concerned with how much he paid and more concerned with the final outcome.

The shoe shine thing is a little annoying, but either he gets on board or he doesn't. "When you work here you will keep your shoes shined. Do you have a problem with that?" Yes or no.

And it is your job as an interviewer to find out what you want to know. You need to steer the conversation. If he only wants to talk about his mission it is possible (probable) he is covering up for a lack of relevant experience. Not that he loved his mission so much. You need to find that out. You control the interview. Not him.

In the interview did you happen to talk about anything other than clothes?

Or maybe he was interviewing to be a sales associate at Dillards or Nordstrams?
