People who've been around for a while "just know" what the unstated priorities are
The old phrase about "knowing what side your bread is buttered on"

I think it's more often about protecting job security and avoiding "career limiting moves".

There may be a few refs with genuine animosity toward BYU who actually let it influence their actions on the court, but I think that's probably a lot more rare.
