I’ll give you the example of the NBA. A team from a cow town was about to make it to the NBA finals and send the NBA
Darling Los Angeles Lakers Home. The calls in that series were atrocious and without question some calls led to the Kings losing the series

Years later, after getting arrested for gambling and other problems, one of the referees of that game spoke about it candidly

He said that it was well known amongst the referees that the NBA wanted the Lakers and the finals and not the kings. He did not say that they were instructed to call the game that way or that anyone had told them. He just said that they called the series that way because it’s led to the outcome their employers wanted.

It’s been interesting to see UConn have some bad calls go against them and unquestionably some terrible biased officiating that everyone could see in the BYU Wisconsin game.

Other people pointed out that one of the referees is someone who has worked a lot of West Coast conference games over the years and may have a negative bias against BYU and might just enjoy sticking it to the team that was too good for all his associates in the WCC.
