There isn’t one answer for everyone, so no one type of treatment or lack thereof
for everyone. There are also different classifications of ADHD which manifest differently and are treated differently.

I have two kids who have been diagnosed with ADHD, one that manifests primarily as attention-deficient, but without hyperactivity; and the other (who is high-functioning on the ASD spectrum) who manifests both attention deficiency and hyperactivity. We have approached this under medical care with a combination of behavioral therapies and medication, but both very differently.

I would recommend you not approach this with an initial bias against medication, as I firmly believe it has its place when there are chemical deficiencies involved. I know there are a lot of negative stigmas and strong opinions out there, especially against medication, but properly-prescribed and administered medication - along with other therapies and approaches - can immensely improve quality of life for those who have ADHD.

Do I believe there are cases where kids are over- or unnecessarily-medicated? Sure. But I also know how it can help people be their best selves and overcome the challenges of true chemical deficiencies in their brain.

The results of medication and therapy for our kids have been incredible for both of them. And no, they aren’t just sitting around in a medically-induced vegetative stupor. They are able to focus and exhibit their natural creativity, intelligence, and personalities in so many ways that were inhibited before.

My older son just wishes we had identified and diagnosed his ADHD sooner, as he really struggled in school before we were able to get him some help.

Good luck with this and I’ll pray your son can get some good assistance.
