My youngest has ADHD and Autism. He tried meds for a few days and said they made
him feel like a different person. He refused to take them and we never considered forcing him. My wife and I have adjusted our views on social norms for him and have him in the life skills class at school. He gets good grades as we monitor his progress and keep him on task. He has a 3.5 GPA and is a junior in high school now.

We still believe things would have been easier for him and us if he had used some form of medication. But it also wasn't necessary for him to seem happy and adjusted enough to do well in school. He still has outbursts when working on computers, working in groups, or playing video games. He has an IEP at school that minimizes his involvement in those things. At home we often have to take away gaming and phone access to get him back in line and on task.
