Doctor thinks my nine-year-old son has adhd. Any advice for navigating this and
getting a proper diagnosis?

He’s struggling in school (mostly math but his teacher has complained that he is generally inattentive/distracted in class) and is prone to angry outbursts. He’s a pretty good/smart kid and those are really the only two issues. I never thought he had adhd and nobody (other than his doctor) has ever suggested to us that he has it. This isn’t the first time he’s fallen behind on school work, but his standardized test scores have always been at least average.

I’ll admit I’m a little triggered by the thought of adhd meds and worried about how they would affect his personality and development.

Any words of wisdom?
