This is not just a Utah fan issue, it's a non-mormon living in Utah issue
I did not grow up in Utah and I see the same things, but I'll quote an executive (who lives in California, but is in Salt Lake one week per month) from the company I work for: Utah is a weird place. You have all the overly good Mormons, and then you have everyone else who has to constantly prove they aren't Mormon. Going to a bar here, you don't see the regular white collar people, everyone is scary looking with all their extreme tattoos and piercings.

This was said on the way to lunch in car with 4 people, of which I was the only LDS member.

This was a couple months ago, so that's not an exact quote, but it's pretty close. There doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground here in Utah. You are either very obviously LDS, or very obviously NOT LDS. And those who are very obviously NOT LDS are also the ones who make up the majority of the Utah fanbase.
