A friend who is not LDS but lived in Salt Lake City 20 years ago for work
Said something similar to me, while we were both living in another state. He said it was hard to find for him to find people in Utah who just wanted to go get a beer and not party to extremes.

However, having lived in Utah the past few years - his experience has been completely different from mine. I’ve had many coworkers and neighbors who are not at all on the extreme ends of society or trying to compensate for not being LDS. Maybe the demographic has changed over the last 20 years. Or maybe I am just older and now I interact with more people out of school with real lives and careers and responsibilities, and who party less crazily than people the same age as university students.

Also I have heard that substance abuse in general has decreased among younger people across the board. so in that regard there may be a surprising but growing trend towards a lifestyle that is more aligned with LDS norms.
