If an owner is "responsible" he has socialized his dog in the neighborhood and in public with many different people AND animals of all ages. If the dog is truly socialized and trained he WILL NOT kill someone. Period. There has never been a dog brought up properly that has killed someone. Not a Pit Bull, not a Rottweiler, Not a German Shepherd and not a Pomeranian. It has NEVER happened. All the stories of people saying that, "It was a friendly good dog" and then it turned or whatever are not telling the whole story of how the dog was raised and socialized. There are a few crucial months in the psychological development of a puppy that can make it or break it. All the people that are going to thumb down this comment here are outing themselves as someone who really does not know a thing about dog psychology. So let me repeat myself. It is not selfish for a responsible dog owner to raise a pit bull or other terrier properly. I'm not against regulating dog ownership. But I am dead set against dictating what breeds a responsible law abiding dog lover can and can not own. The Pit Bulls that have caused problems are those that were purchased for the purpose of status achievement. These dog owners would cause ANY dog of ANY breed to be dangerous. But you are all right on one thing and I think that we can all agree that a Pit Bull put in the hands of an abusive, negligent, mean and stupid person elevates the risk of someone getting hurt and I agree that these people shouldn't have ANY kind of animal let alone a dog. Now let's see all those red thumbs!
