I'd start with behavioral strategies to see if it can be mitigated that way. Most people who truly have it are best served with both behavioral interventions and medication. If your A1C is creeping up you start with diet & exercise. If that doesn't yield the results, would you expect to just will power your blood sugar readings? Not everyone needs or benefits from meds but this is a real condition a person doesn't just will power themselves out of.
The teacher feedback sounds pretty classic ADHD. Most people are familiar with the inattention & hyperactive aspects but impulse control is the 3rd one that's a big indicator. Get a Connor's long form questionnaire done by the teacher & yourselves as parents to rule out other conditions such as anxiety & depression. Get a licensed psych or psychiatrist to do a full evaluation. It's not the end of the world and may even open up the world if you approach it like any other treatable medical condition a person may have.
