Prom my senior year of high school was an awkward-fest. An awkward-palooza even.
A bunch of friends were going and kept telling me I needed to get a date and come with them. I wanted to but didn't have any great prospects. There was this incredibly gorgeous girl in my psychology class. The desks were arranged in rows from front to back. She always sat in the row to the right of me a few desks up. She always showed up to class in running shorts and stretched her long, tan athletic legs into the aisle. I remember nothing from that class except this girl's legs.

So I ask her to prom. She says yes. I hardly know her and am a little nervous but we'll with a big group of my friends that I consider pretty cool so it'll be fine.

Awkward event #1: We're having dinner at a friend's house. As we're going in another friend is standing on the steps leading up to the front door. His date is standing a couple steps below him. I'm not sure what happens but something startles my friend. He turns quickly to look at something. As he does so his elbow lands a brutal blow to his date's nose. She quickly gets her hands to her face but everyone can see blood seeping through her fingers. Miraculously she doesn't get blood on her dress. She gets the bleeding stopped, cleans herself and the evening goes on...

Awkward event #2: I'm slow-dancing with my date. We're chatting. She's even cooler than I imagined. She's relaxing. I'm pulling her in closer. I ask myself if this could really work. Just then a guy in my group twirls by with his date. "Hey you two! Quit dancing so close! Ha ha ha!" My date imediately stiffens up and distances herself the Book of Mormon width she learned in seminary or YW or something. She stays that way the rest of the evening. I was so incredibly mad at my "friend". There should have been another bloody nose that night.

Awkward event #3: I wasn't in on the planning so I didn't know what the post-dance activities would be. I was really hoping for something fun my date would enjoy. I figured my friends were pretty cool guys and would have something good. We were going to the home of the wealthiest guy in the group so my hopes were high for something impressive. You ready for this? The activity was sitting on the couch shooting rubber bands at little green army men placed on the firelpace mantle. My date was not impressed.

I actually ran into this girl at BYU after my mission and took her out a few times. She was still super cool and attractive. It went better but never quite clicked.
