I think it depends on the phase of life. Right now I'm working on earning a PhD in Chemistry. I'm not a workaholic by nature, but I put in somewhere between 50-60 hours on a weekly basis. Neither my wife nor I are fans of how many hours I work right now. We both agree that me being home more is more important than career achievement or extra money. I think most young fathers who are earning a graduate degree need to put in extra hours to finish their education.
But my wife and I also understand this is temporary, and I won't always work this many hours regularly. I'm planning on hiring some undergrads to help me get more work done without me spending so many hours in the lab. And when I finally finish and get a salaried position, my work schedule will look more like a standard business hours.
