and as such hate to see their offices empty. Obviously there are times that employee collaboration (depending on the job) are beneficial. But with the technology we have now that same thing can often be accomplished without employees having to trudge into an office in the middle of a city a good distance from their home.

The "benefit" the company receives is their "investment" in real estate goes used. Oftentimes it's as simple as that.
