I’ve seen a lot of complaints about this on FB and Instagram as well. I think it’s dumb to dismiss it
Disclaimer: I am in my 30s and bought a house at 33 thanks in large part to some very unique opportunities we had

But there are a lot of people who have been saving up for a house for 10-15 years only to see housing prices increase faster than their savings.

If they manage to save up a decent chunk of change, they see houses they make an offer on go for all cash and 5% over asking.

They could try to get a house in a lower cost of living area, but that means first finding a new job, and one that isn’t a commensurate drop in salary. I think this is why so many are ardent WFH supporters

Many of what some would call “starter homes” are either new 4000 sq fr new builds a 75 minute commute to business districts where the office probably is, or they’re falling apart 1200 sq ft shacks closer to downtown in a terrible school district and unsafe neighborhood. There is no such thing as a feasible starter home in a place like Murray any more.

It’s obvious that wages have not kept up with the cost of housing.

Student loans I hear are a big burden, much more so than 30 years ago

Anyone buying a new home is also paying higher taxes than someone who bought the same home 30 years ago. This is different from state to state, but if the annual increase is capped on property taxes, there’s no way someone who bought in the 90s is paying anywhere near what someone buying a house in 2024 is going to pay

All in all, it paints a pretty bleak picture for would-be homebuyers. I don’t blame them at all for deciding to live their lives in the meantime instead of trying to stay on the treadmill and getting nowhere while living like they’re in the Great Depression for 15-20 years just to hopefully be able to buy a house some day.

This thread all sounds very much like old guys on CB shaking their fists about the youths not having to walk to school uphill both ways in the snow.
