I think it's a western state issue.
I've had season tickets to Cal back when they were good six or seven years ago. We occasionally go to Stanford games. We've been to a bunch of UCLA games. I honestly believe the atmosphere in LES for a 'routine' game (not a Top-15 or rival opponent) is better than Cal, Stanford, or UCLA. In fact, Stanford's game-day atmosphere is atrocious. Most of our old MWC brethren have comparable atmospheres to Stanford.
I also grew up in Michigan. LES has NOTHING on most of the B1G game-day atmospheres, but neither do any of the Pac-12 schools.
