I’m not just saying that because it would have helped us, but if the goal of the conference is to promote its best teams, then that would be the best practice. I’m content with the other tiebreaking procedures and am just suggesting this as a direct replacement for the in-conference record of opponents measure.
Also, teams actually have some control over who they schedule out of conference. But the main point is, if you want the “best” teams representing the conference, this gets you closer. BYU basically got no credit for its win at SMU from either the CFP committee or the Big12.
