Both statements show what he meant: they were trying to pin deep and

they got an incredibly fortuitous break when the ball hit our DB and they recovered.

Arguing that this was the play design smacks of thinking plays work out nearly identically to how they are drawn up in the small play-selector thumbnail charts on Madden.
