some red flags that should have probably required a deeper dive into but again, I have no idea who else even applied for the job or what their qualifications were. Maybe the other candidates had more red flags. BYU wasn't a P4 team at the time either which likely limited options too.

Just saying no one can just say the hire was obviously a poor one without knowing more of the details which we'll likely never know.
