Never lived in areas with many non-Japanese around. Mostly in areas with lots of rice paddies. Tokyo being the exception. I was in Hiroshima on the outskirts over 30 years ago (no foreigners lived near me, but also no rice paddies around). The other 2 years were all rural. Takamatsu felt a little like Utah County, but still lots of rice paddies around. The rest of my time (about half) were very small towns or way on the outside of smallish cities with lots of rice paddies.
