Sorry for not starting a related thread last time. Had no idea one could follow related threads. Hopefully I did this right. I’ll post the same pics I did earlier in case some of you missed them.
Weight - 325 lbs. started at 355, so down 30 lbs! Nutritionist said a good amount of that is actually fat and not just water weight. He’s been on one of the weight loss drugs / appetite suppressants. It’s been working well.
Exercise -latest was cycling indoors for 26 minutes @ 100 watts without stopping and no puking. His first ride a couple weeks ago was maybe 15 minutes free spinning with little resistance with a bunch of breaks and puking at the end. He’s certainly improving at a slow and steady pace which is what we’re aiming for. We can’t do an FTP test because we don’t want to kill him, so we’re just guessing at watts. 100 watts was a bit hard for him so we might drop it to 80 watts and see how long he can go. His butt is still killing him, but clearly it’s slowly improving since he’s able to stay on for longer with no breaks.
He’s also been walking a 5k around his neighborhood most days. It’s pretty hilly as well, so that’s helping getting his heart rate up for a sustained amount of time. It takes him a little over an hour to walk it.
We’re looking to get him a bike fit next week and likely find him a new cervelo road bike with disc breaks and electronic shifting. The coach will likely do a lease to buy where he gets a new bike and at the end of the bet, he either buys it outright or just pays the difference of what it cost to what he can sell it for. Apparently Cervelos retain a lot of their value.
This week will be telling because the cycling coach and I are out of town for the St. George half Ironman during two of our normal workouts on Thursday and Saturday. If he still comes to the bike shop for his rides by himself, that’ll be huge. I just hope he doesn’t have a heart attack while we’re not there. We’ll probably just give him easy spins while we’re gone.
Slow and steady will finish this race.
