I'll start doing these on Tuesdays since that's when he sees his nutritionist who weighs him and determines fat vs. muscle vs. water weight/loss/gain
His scale weight loss has slowed for now, which is giving him a hard time mentally. I told him to stop weighing himself daily and just rely on the nutritionist's measurements, but that's a hard habit to break. He's at 319 lbs, which is only one pound less than I posted here last week, but three pounds less than when he saw the nutritionist a couple days later. Overall he's down 36 lbs from when he started.
According to her measurements, he's down 7.35 lbs of fat since last week, which is HUGE (figuratively and literally) and gained a bit of muscle and water weight. She said he's doing as well as possible, is way ahead of her expected schedule, and even asked if she could share his graph to her social media since he's doing so well.
We got his bike from Cervelo, but can't use it until after next Monday since that's when his appointment is with the bike fitter to have it built and adjusted to him. He is also waiting on a few extra parts like a mountain bike handle set which I guess is straighter and wider than a road bike's, pedal extenders since his feet can't come in close to the bike (for now), and a few other things. We're hoping that next Tuesday he'll have HIS bike and be able to ride it in comfort.
Once he has his bike, we'll start some outdoor rides and even go down to the proposed spot in Spanish Fork/Payson and do one length (~7.2 miles) of the 100 mile course. (14 lengths is the full amount). Hopefully that'll ease his mind since one length will probably take us ~30 minutes with him drafting behind us at a slow pace. He'll hopefully see how much easier it is outside with drafting.
Today he was able to chat while riding, which he didn't think was a big deal, but even as late as a week ago he couldn't really even talk while riding since he was in so much pain/discomfort/heavy exertion. The cycling coach told me to discreetly increase his FTP 10 watts on Thursday and see how he reacts. We don't want him to know it'll be harder and if he doesn't complain, I'll increase it another 10 watts on Saturday. He's at 90 watts right now, which is incredibly low. His zone 1 effort is 40 watts, which is basically zero resistance or close to it. Not super concerned about increasing FTP that high since on the day of, he'll be drafting behind the two of us. We just need to get him comfortable on his bike to be able to slowly increase time in the saddle.
He's continued with his mostly daily 5k walks (4 days a week) and they've consistently gotten faster. He's well under an hour, which is great since he lives in a hilly neighborhood. Eventually we'll add him some weight training and maybe some water walking/pool workouts at his local Vasa.
Food is tough. The appetite suppressant drug is still working fine (double doses now), but the diet his nutritionist put him on is hit or miss on taste. Some of it he hates so he's eating less than she has him scheduled for. Hopefully he was able to talk to her today about different foods that aren't so gross.
Anyways, that's it for this week. Still chugging along. He doesn't feel like he's improving, but he certainly is. People at his biweekly poker game have started to notice that he's losing weight. Hopefully this Saturday at the next game it'll be even more apparent and he'll feel like he's improving again.
