My dad was a 6 am-3 pm guy his entire career. Occasionally, projects had him working around the clock (and he got paid up to triple time), but that was rare. This was at Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto and Santa Clara and was common for his generation in the tech industry. Get off early, do happy hour at the local bar or Elks Lodge or whatever fraternity you belonged to that don't exist anymore because nobody has time for that nonsense anymore, and be home by 5 or 6 for dinner. I remember him saying after he toured the then new Sun Microsystems facility (early 90's iirc) in Fremont how screwed up he thought it was to see cots and mini fridges in all the offices.
Studies have shown Americans are spending more time at work. They are afraid to take vacation for fear work will pile up. As employees retire or move on, instead of replacing them, many (most?) companies redistribute the work load. Gotta show the shareholders how much leaner they are on that bottom line!
