My suggestion is don't get him a phone at all. Why buy something you know...
is damaging to him, emotionally?
If you deem him old enough to have a phone, let him buy his own phone.
I've never bought my kids a smartphone, because I don't value them having it. If it were up to me, they'd have dumb phones or Pinwheel phones all through high school. But around 16 we allow them to buy their own phone. But if they didn't want to buy it, I'd be all the happier for it. I don't want them to have it, they do, so they pay for it.
