A gentle critique of a popular book I've heard given: is that most all its characters are quite black and white and don't reflect the multi-layered nuance of most human beings who do both good and bad things all the time.
They fit in one of the two buckets given. The righteous believer and the wicked, lying, non-believer. Nephi, Alma, Mormon, etc, and Laman, Korihor, Sherem, Nehor. And you have some people go from mostly all bad and persecutor to all good and proselytizing. Not much character development, etc. Some apologists might say that's by design and for good reason. Or give a couple possible exceptions to that observation.
Nevertheless, if you're reading that every day, it's possible to over time, begin to see the world through that often unhelpful, binary, inexperienced lens. Possibly making it less likely you're going to try to build bridges and compromise with those who may not like you at first.
