A lot fewer people work as farmers or wage earners than they used to, and
instead more people work in knowledge and service industries where there's often little firewall between personal time and company time. A 1960s factory worker wasn't bringing his work home or building more widgets after the kids went to bed. I don't think your blanket statement is necessarily true, even if the type of work folks do now is very different than it used to be.
