for "I still prefer 8".
I love the idea of each P4 conference being able to decide who their conference champ and runner up are (runner up wouldn't have to be the loser of the conference championship). It would decrease the whining--the committee's biases would have less influence. Instead there would be clear rules/criteria established by each conference about who gets in. It's up to the conference to make those rules as fair and un-biased as possible. But the conferences could even have their own committee to decide who gets into the championship game and who is the runner-up if they want. But it's clear that having a committee to determine anything is a bad idea (though I think it mostly works for college basketball). If you don't meet the criteria for being your conference champion or runner-up then you're out of luck. You may still get an at-large bid, but if you don't, then you really only have yourself and your conference rules/criteria to blame. Also, the G5 should only get 4 auto-bids or be forced to consolidate into only 4 conferences. That would leave 4 at-large bids which should pick up any situations where the conference criteria somehow got it "wrong".
