You answered your own question. You can't trust the committee. BYU or ISU was
left out becuase it was argued by the B1G, SEC, media, and committee that the B12 was only good enough to get 1 team in while the B1G got 4 and the SEC 3.
ASU was our conference champion. But lost.
How can we argue now that BYU or ISU, the runner ups, deserved in if our champion can't win a single game?
If ASU won, we would have had a better argument that a runner up belonged too.
Now next year the committee can say, see, we got it right last year.
If you win on the field you make the argument weaker.
