Wut? Of course it's self interest. To be a better company. That's all they SHOULD care about.
They don't care that much about firing, they've already done that before. It's a drop in the bucket for them ultimately (severance). You just assume that there is no difference because you like working from home. It's actually amazing to me to see how poorly employees pitch the benefits of WFH. You can apply at our company to go full-time WFH (we are hybrid) and almost always people start the argument with, "I like working from home and it gives me more time to do x that I like to do". What benefit does it give the company?

People that WFH on average are:

1. Less responsive
2. Not as effective in a crisis and are not relied upon
3. Have trouble onboarding and training into new areas of the company
4. If they are in a cross-departmental role they have struggles building interpersonal relationships where people need to trust them
5. Spend more time on errands during business hours when mission critical items need to be done

I have data on all this btw for my own company. Again, sucks for those who are effective at home, but on average it's just worse, and trying to mix it all together is just too much for most organizations and gets more difficult the bigger you get. Two of my board members went full back to work from the office as well. Just how it is.
