I just got the P1S, it's awesome- Bambu is perfect if you just want to print
Ender / Other brands if you also want to tinker or learn the ins and outs of 3d printing... I started with an Ender 3 but actually getting the thing to print perfectly was more like a hobby rather than it being an appliance to print things, which is where the Bambu excels.

I see some 3d printers for sale on Prime Day and my son will want one for Christmas. Anyone have any recommendations?

Yep, that is my go to recommendation. I wish I had one. I still have an original Ender 3 with probably $300 of upgrades.

If I wasn't into 3d printing as much as I am I would get Bambulab as well. I have 2 Prusas which are more expensive
