You already know the answer to that question.

He was the coach in waiting when the messages came out.

They demoted him and gave him a pay cut for a year.

Now he's back to being the coach in waiting.

So - if the texts came out right now, they'd probably cut his pay in half for a year and demote him for a minute and around the year 2030 we'd be reading about how his latest contract has him as the coach in waiting.
