My wife grew up in a socially divided school district in Akron, OH. She was in a girl's school club and very close to some of the members who were AA--she would have thought she was best friends with 2 of them. They were always calling each other the "N" word. One day she said it in the same context they were using. She said you would have thought she had quickly dawned a KKK official uniform as all these "friends" came down on her hard and told her they could use the word, but she never could. Lesson learned.
