The original Godzilla, from 1954, was indeed a guy in a suit. This Godzilla was done in a way to honor the original
Godzilla mixed with updated special effects. (Hard to honor the original and not have some semblance to the guy in the suit) Again the movie received awards for it's visual effects, which is impressive, especially considering the budget it was made on.

Part of that reason is the director has an extensive background in special effects and was able to supervise each shot to make sure he got his desired outcome.

Again, movies usually don't achieve 98% from critics and audiences for movies that are just silly fun, unless maybe it's a kids movie... maybe.

So, obviously, there is a level of suspension of disbelief when you're talking about a giant monster. Maybe that's where the disconnect is. Maybe it's that your families ability to suspend disbelief is so low that you're not able to let yourself have that enjoyment. To enjoy it you have to buy into the fact that, in this reality, such a monster can be a reality.

But, again, your experience wasn't the normal experience. Most people praised the movie for is special effects and loved how menacing this Godzilla was. Look up YT reviews of the movie, you'll see what I'm saying.

I've heard people describe this as close to a horror movie as a Godzilla movie can be. While others say you could remove Godzilla altogether and it would still be a great movie about PTSD and survivors guilt When a movie is dealing with something that traumatic I'm not sure how it can be described as "fun silly popcorn flick". But I digress.

I only address this because you were the one to ask the question. Either you were hoping that a lot of people agreed with you or you loved being the contrarian. However, there's ample evidence that most people don't agree with you. Take that for what is worth.
