They gave up a guy they were going to waive in a few days and Landry Shamet for an all star level player. How is that bad?
Ya they have depth issues, but they were going to have those regardless. Ya they are spending a lot of money, but the owner seems perfectly fine with that. It’s his money. The point is to try and win a title in the next two years. They’ll deal with the 3-5 years down the line consequences later.
People also seem to be forgetting that Ayton was always their best bet as a trade piece to add depth and he’s still on the team. Trade him for 2-3 guys and now all of a sudden they have 6 rotation guys. Get a couple ring chasers, bring back a couple of their own free agents(Landale, Craig, Okogie) and they can use their Trade exception from the Saric trade which would allow them to add a player for up to 4.9 million. All of a sudden that team isn’t so thin.
I also expect them to buy an early 2nd or late 1st round draft pick before Thursday.
Sure one of those guys could get hurt and you’d be in trouble, but that’s true for almost every team.
Choices were Beal, CP3, or some FA with the MLE. I think Beal was the right choice.
