I agree there is a possibility that the historians had bias in reporting their version of the story... and they may be completely wrong. However, shouldn't we use the same amount of skepticism for the version we hear in church? I always hear my fellow Mormons tell me not to trust anything outside of the church, but they don't use that same suspicion and distrust to their church because they believe it all comes from God.
I know we always say in the church, "people make mistakes." The real question is: Can prophets and apostles make mistakes related to doctrine? In looking at the priesthood ban and polygamy, I had to unequivocally say - yes. And eventually that led to seeing other doctrinal mistakes.
