Why would the ground need to be thawed? The ground is never frozen at that depth
in Utah. Only the upper foot to 18 inches of the soil column freezes in Utah County during the winter. Soil temperatures only increase with depth.

I don't know if you've ever watched the rigs that drill the holes for deep aggregate piers and columns, but they chew through surface frost like it's not even there. Those machines can weigh in excess of 100 tons.
