"Hey guys, here's a check for $5M. Do whatever you want with it! I do not want to have any sway or influence here. And by all means, feel no obligation to account to me how this money was used."
For legal and privacy reasons, every donation that BYU takes becomes the sole property of the Church, blah, blah, blah. We all get that Clark. Let's not be coy here. If Ryan Smith gave money to BYU with the direct implication of it being for KY and then BYU used it for putting new carpet in the JFSB, I think that relationship would end quickly. I'm sure that former Harvard professor Gilbert understands that, right? (Right Clark?). Again, if CG feels the need to be this dodgy on a simple matter of recognizing that donors pay for things at universities (something no one really bats an eye at), then I cannot imagine how intellectually dishonest he is in more complex matters of CES administration.
