I expected it because I'd heard how intense the movie is. And

One of my main criticisms is that the monster looked so silly that it wasn't intense. None of it felt real.

Also Aliens attacking people isn't too far of from a sea monster/thing attacking people.

Another comparison would have been Jurassic Park or Jurassic World both of which looked far better than this and felt way more real and actually provided tension.
